Handling Broken Bones After Trauma

Having to deal with a broken bone is not a fun experience. It’s one of the most common consequences after a bad accident, and it can seriously compromise your ability to go through your daily routine or work. This painful event requires immediate medical attention, especially if the break took place after major trauma or injury. Not calling emergency services or leaving an injured person unattended can be life-threatening and bring permanent consequences.

Recognizing Symptoms

One of the things that make broken bones extremely dangerous is the fact you might be unable to recognize them until it’s too late, and a lot of damage has been done. Just like concussions or brain injuries, symptoms that are clearly visible won’t show up until a specific amount of time has passed. You should always remember that a broken bone often causes the following:

  • Intense pain in the injured area. If you try to move it, the pain will get worse
  • Numbness around the injury
  • Heavy bleeding if the bone pierced through the skin
  • Discolored skin and swelling

Knowing how to go through the recovery process without making everything worse will also make a world of difference for your loved ones and yourself.

Changing Your Routine

When you’re injured, your routine needs to change and become something that can be done with as little effort as humanly possible. Asking for help with your furniture so you can move it and clear a path through each room that allows you to avoid hitting other objects is a great start. Remember to also remove anything that has the ability to trip you, and always keep your personal belongings at arm’s length.

Every single action needs to require as little movement as possible. And last but not least, you should always keep a phone nearby, especially if you live alone, as you’ll need to call for help if a difficult situation arises.

Eliminate Stress

This step is easier said than done, as experiencing broken bones is already a stressful experience, but you should do everything in your power to just relax and eliminate all sources of stress. For example, if your injury took place because of someone else’s carelessness, you’re entitled to compensation according to personal injury law, but don’t seek justice by yourself. You’re already dealing with a major injury, so try to be smart and contact experienced injury lawyers. They already know what to do, they can appear in court and speak on your behalf, so you can completely focus on your recovery. Don’t try to do everything by yourself while you’re suffering, as the consequences are going to be something you’ll regret in the long run.

Exercising

Laying in bed all day might be tempting, but if you stop moving completely, you’ll actually prolong the recovery process and it will be difficult to get back to your usual activities. Follow your physician’s instructions and do your exercises every day. Taking a walk outside, if the pain allows you to, can also be a great way to relax and enjoy the scenery, even if you can only do it for a short period of time.

Controlling Your Mind

Anytime you’re injured, it’s important to not let negative emotions overtake you. Remember to exercise your mind along with your body, and try to distance yourself from pessimistic thoughts every time you can. Watching a TV show, playing games, and solving puzzles are all activities that will keep you mentally active. This situation is temporary, and you’ll come back stronger than before, so focus on yourself and rest when it’s necessary.
