What to Know About Year-Round RV Living

Year-round RV living is not to be taken lightly. Yes, you’re searching for fun, freedom, and adventure, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t need to take caution or make proper plans first. If you’re thinking of starting a new way of life out on the road, here’s a few things that you should know before you buckle up for the ride:

You need to be selective

Packing for year-round RV living is a world away from packing up for a vacation or even for a finite amount of time living in a van. It needs to be thought through very carefully, and while you absolutely need to bring along essentials, remember that you can always pick a few things up along the way. If you haven’t really experienced living in a campervan long term, it’s easy to assume that packing what fits is a great idea. But take a moment to think about all the things that you usually accumulate throughout a year and you’ll realize pretty quickly that you should cut your expected packing in about half.

The organization is a must

Organizing, cleaning, and sorting is kind of a big deal regardless of where or how you live, but it becomes even more important when you’re living year-round in your camper. If you let your organization slip, you’ll find that your day-to-day life is a lot more stressful, frustrating and difficult. An RV is a very small space, and once something gets lost it can feel like it’s gone forever. By staying strict on the organization rules, you’ll avoid all kinds of drama and worry about lost items, overwhelming mess, and unsanitary living conditions.

It can get dirty

If you’ve already trialed living in your van then you know this. Living in an RV gets dirty. This doesn’t just mean the physical dirt that comes in from the outside, but also your clothes, your belongings and sometimes yourself. Living on the road means that you don’t have access to washing machines, vacuums, baths or other cleaning amenities as often as you’d like, so just be prepared to accept that your life is going to be a little less clean than you might be used to. Always take your shoes and dirty coats off before you come inside and make sure that your van is well ventilated with lots of windows.

Prepare yourself for the food

You’re not going to be eating scraps, but keep in mind that you won’t be enjoying mind-blowing cuisine every night either. The food will generally have to be simple to cook, easy, packaged food. Unless you score yourself a camper with additional cooking features or you hit an RV park with some amenities, you’ll have to always keep it simple. Just prepare yourself and treat yourself to a nice restaurant once a month or so.

Get the right gear

Your van needs to be right for you, otherwise, your time really won’t be as enjoyable as it could be. If you’re planning on adventuring the landscape, make sure you find a great off road camper trailer. This will let you have all the fun and freedom that you’re looking for. If you’re planning on having guests, find a roomier van that has a little extra space. By properly choosing your kit, you won’t regret things down the line.

Researching is always a good idea

Be sure to do your research on the lifestyle, places to park and sites to see before you hit the road. This one is important, going in blind doesn’t serve anyone well and you want to prepare yourself for the most amazing trip possible!

If you’re sure the year-round RV living is for you then get ready to have an adventure of a lifetime, there really is nothing else like it!
